After three years of working to secure funding through the New York Department of Homeland Security to train and handle an Arson Detection Dog, Central Coventry Fire Lt. Adam Dauplaise was recently able to bring his new pet and partner home.
Jack, the 1 1/2 -year-old Black Lab, came to Dauplaise about eight weeks ago from the Lollipop Farms Shelter in NY and has since become his pet, companion and partner. Jack is currently five weeks into his eight-week training in detecting ignitable fluids and accelerants - a skill that will be helpful to fire and law enforcement officials when determining if a fire was caused by arson.
When Jack came to live with Dauplaise, he had no prior training of any kind, but has made significant progress, having already walked through 203 scenes to become familiarized with the process.
"All of the training started with me and Jack," he said. "We started working together from day one."
Dauplaise, a certified explosives investigator, explained that the training is teaching Jack to detect any ignitable liquids, such as gas, propane, kerosene, butane and other substances commonly found in arson investigations. At the end of the eight weeks, the dog will be certified by a chemist, allowing him to then aid investigators in cases.
"These dogs are very effective tools when it comes to arson fires," said CCFD Chief Bob Seltzer. "Jack will be the only arson dog currently in Rhode Island and will be yet another tool in our toolbox."
"This has been a big commitment on Adam's part," Seltzer went on. "It's amazing how he does it."
Dauplaise explained that even with the trained dog, he and other investigators will still have to perform each step of the investigation process as they normally would, as many of the substances Jack will detect are commonly used in homes and not necessarily evidence of arson. However, Jack's presence will allow the process to be faster and more efficient.
When he's not training, Jack acts and is treated like an everyday pet dog, but when Dauplaise orders him to "find the cause" of a fire, he delivers.
"Jack trains with me and comes home every night with me as my pet," he said. "But once he has his harness on, he's a totally different dog and knows what he's supposed to do."...

    April 17, 2012 UPDATE (Apr. 17 6:25 p.m.):

Fire Chief Bob Seltzer has stated that the brush fire that began on Ferncrest Dr. Tuesday afternoon affected about an acre of land but caused no damage to the residential area nearby.
Based on information from a nearby resident, the blaze may have been caused by local juveniles who frequented a wooden "fort" in the woods. The structure was destroyed in the fire.
"There was heavy timber burning and a lot of fallen trees," said Seltzer. "It looked a lot worse than it was because of such heavy smoke."
There is still no confirmed cause of the fire.
Apr. 17 - 3:14 p.m.:
According to Central Coventry Fire Chief Bob Seltzer, fire crews are responding to a brush fire in the wooded area behind Sandy Bottom Road.
Flames and smoke could be seen originating across the river behind the Sandy Bottom Rd. plaza (containing Olde Theater Diner, Re/Max, Subway, etc.).
The cause of the fire is still unknown, however the National Weather Service did issue a Red Flag Warning this morning due to dry and windy conditions that can greatly heighten the risk of fire....

At approximately 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, three engines from Central Coventry Fire Department and one from Anthony Fire Department responded to a brush fire at 1650 Flat River Rd., on a half acre section of land between Rebuilder's Automotive Supply and Industrial Dr.
Chief Bob Seltzer of CCFD said that several magazines and pieces of trash were found in the area that suggest a possible gathering place for locals, however no fort or structure was found as in similar recent fires.
"We knocked it down pretty quick and the damage was minimal - mainly just grass," said Seltzer. "It was a very small area compared to everything else we've responded to lately."

At 2:21 p.m. on Friday, Central Coventry Fire crews responded to multiple calls of a house fire at 29 Lemis St.
No one was in the home at the time, but several neighborhood teens were riding bikes outside when they saw the flames coming from inside.
CCFD Chief Bob Seltzer explained that firefighters had the situation under control in about 10-15 minutes, however he believes the fire had been burning inside for some time before the calls came in. The home sustained heavy fire at the rear windows and door as well as in the attic and hallway. Heat and smoke damage were noted throughout the residence, also.
Two adults and one teenager were displaced and are currently being assisted by the Red Cross with temporary housing, food and personal care items. There were no reported injuries, however two cats were killed in the fire.
Fire Marshal Dave Godin collected statements from witnesses at the scene and was still investigating the fire's cause Friday night....

Colvintown Brush Fire

Central Coventry firefighters responded to the second brush fire of Thursday evening in a wooded area off of Colvintown Rd., approximately 1.3 miles from the Hope Furnace Rd. intersection.
According to CCFD Chief Bob Seltzer, a section of woods slightly larger than an acre was affected.
"It's hard to tell how much damage there is right now," said Seltzer around 10:30 p.m. Thursday night. "We'll be able to assess the damage better in the morning."
The cause of this fire, as well as the Maple Valley Rd. blaze that was fought simultaneously is currently unknown.
After surveying the damage with his crew and DEM Forest Ranger Dave Palumbo on Friday morning, CCFD Chief Bob Seltzer confirmed that the brush fire in the woods on Colvintown Rd. damaged about .85 of an acre of forest, but caused no property damage.
He explained that a neighbor called the department around 7:30 p.m. to report the blaze and also to mention that kids on dirtbikes had been in the area before it began. It took crews about an hour to get the flames under control, with help from tanker trucks sent by Hope Jackson and Scituate departments.
At the scene, a scorched lean-to was visible Friday morning, causing officials to believe that the location was a hangout for local youth. Dirtbikes and ATVs are often heard traveling through the area according to neighbors.
"We don't know exactly what caused it, and it's very difficult to investigate unless there has been property damage or people are found at the scene," Seltzer said. "But people really need to realize that with it being so dry and windy, it doesn't take much - just a dropped cigarette or hot embers and a little wind to spread."
Members of the CCFD spent Friday morning and afternoon wetting the perimeter, finding and raking out hot spots and retrieving fire hose with Forest Ranger Palumbo that had been left behind Thursday night.
"I do have to say that it is very nice to rely on fire and police departments that do a professional job," Palumbo said. "These guys are out here all the time doing a tremendous job staying on top of everything. We're very lucky to have them."

Around midnight on Saturday evening, four engines, a tower ladder and a rescue from Central Coventry Fire crews responded to a call for a house fire at 6 Metro Dr.
The two adults and two children that resided in the raised ranch were out of the home when firefighters arrived.
According to Captain Dave Gorman of the CCFD, the cause of the blaze is still under investigation, but it appears the fire began in a wall on the second floor and spread to the roof line and into the attic. A possible cause is thought to have been an outdoor fireplace.
The residents were displaced but are currently staying with family...
